Pseudostellaria heterophylla and P. palibiniana are dimorphic
cleistogamous species which produces chasmogamous (CH) and
cleistogamous (CL) flower within a same individual.Both species
propagateby both seed reproduction and vegetativereproduction,thus
being morphologically similarand inhabitin similar environment.P.
heterophylla blossoms 1 to 5 CH flowers perindividualwhereas P.
palibinianablossomsonlyoneCH flower.Thisstudyaimedtoidentify
thedifferencein seed production by CH and CL flowersbetween the
twospeciesanditseffectongeneticdiversityandstructure.
The number ofseed produced by CH flower for each plantwas
three-times higher in P. heterophylla (23.7 seeds) than in P.
palibiniana(7.8seeds).Likewise,thenumberofseed producedby CL
flowerwastwo-timeshigherinP.heterophylla(44.1seeds)thaninP.
palibiniana(22.5).Thus,theproportionofCH seedsintheentireseed
productionwasslightlyhigherinP.heterophyllathaninP.palibiniana
(34.9\% vs.25.7\%,respectively).
In a quadratof2 x 4 m forspatialgenetic structure,44 and 39
genets were identified for P. heterophylla and P. palibiniana,
respectively.G/N valuethatreflectsclonaldiversity washigherin P.
heterophylla (0.349) than in P. palibiniana (0.222). Thus, it was
considered that vegetative reproduction was more extensive in P.
palibinianathaninP.heterophylla.
Inbothspecies,significantspatialgeneticstructurewasdetected.Sp

value thatreflects the intensity ofspatialstructure was two-times
higher in P.palibiniana (0.229) than in P.heterophylla (0.095).Sp
valueestimated atrametlevelwashigherthan thatatgenetlevelin
both species.Itwasabout49.3\%,and 76.8\% forP.heterophylla and
P.palibiniana,respectively,indicating stronger effects of vegetative
reproduction on the spatialstructure in P.palibiniana.The size of
geneticpatch estimatedfrom correlogram waslargerin P.palibiniana
(1.7m)thaninP.heterophylla(0.9m).
Overall, it was considered that higher genetic diversity was
maintained in P.heterophylla than in P.palibiniana due to higher
production and proportion ofseed from CH flowerin P.heterophylla.
In addition,itwas assumed thatspatially more closely related and
larger genetic patch was formed for P. palibiniana than for P.
heterophylla because of more extensive vegetative propagation and
higherproportion ofseedby CL flowerin P.palibiniana.However,it
waspointed outthatfurtherecogeneticstudiesemploying a growing
numberofmolecularmarkers(particularly,codominant)arerequiredto
enhancethereliabilityoftheoutcomesfrom thepresentstudy
